Judge for the Forage Competition

Donald Barrie comes from a Borders hill farming family, but has spent most of his working life in estate and farm management in the north-east of Scotland, where he manages Glensaugh for the James Hutton Institute. Donald’s concern about our use of finite resources is reflected in his attitude to forage conservation: the best of ingredients go in, an investment which must be repaid in a quality feed that can displace cereal supplements. Donald is also using EID to interrogate the performance of Glensaugh’s sheep flock. “Work smarter, not harder”, more production from grass and a rigorous culling policy are all in the mix to free up time to spend on life’s more rewarding activities. Donald is married with 2 children and enjoys doing “dangerous stuff” with his children like climbing, sea swimming and ski touring.
